What to know about Super Bowl LVII

The Teams

The Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs both ended the regular season 14-3 and as leaders of their respective conferences. Thus, both of the Super Bowl teams only had to win two playoff games to make it there (though the odds of the regular season conference winner doesn’t always indicate a Super Bowl clinch!).

In the NFC final, the Eagles defeated the San Francisco 49ers in a 31-7 blowout. This will be the fourth Super Bowl appearance for the Eagles, who lost in 1980 to the Oakland Raiders and in 2004 to the New England Patriots. In their most recent appearance in 2017, they got their revenge with a victory over the Patriots. Quarterback Jalen Hurts is in just his second season as a starter for the Eagles, taking them to the playoffs both years. They lost last year’s Wild Card game to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but this year, he’s taken them to the final and will hope to a championship.

In the AFC final, the Chiefs had a closer call, but came away with the 23-20 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. The Chiefs will be making their fifth Super Bowl appearance, having lost their first in 1966 to the Green Bay Packers, but won three years later against the Minnesota Vikings. They didn’t make it to another Super Bowl after that again until 2019, when quarterback Patrick Mahomes led them to victory over the San Francisco 49ers. They went on to the Super Bowl the following year as well, but lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In the five seasons that Mahomes has been the Chiefs’ quarterback, the team has gone to the Super Bowl three times with one win so far, and he’ll try to get them another this year.

The National Anthem

The national anthem will be sung this year by Grammy Award-winner Chris Stapleton ahead of kickoff. The country music star is part of a pregame lineup of artists, including R&B singer Babyface, who will sing “America the Beautiful” as well as actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, who will sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing”. 44-year-old Stapleton has won 15 Country Music Association awards and 10 Academy Country Music awards. The national anthem will also be performed in American Sign Language by “Coda” actor Troy Kotsur. There will be a Navy flyover during the anthem with female aviators to celebrate 50 years of women flying in the Navy.
