Joe Brr

It’s all about the ‘ice’ with this one, but the kind of ice that comes in carats. In a reference to all the diamond laden ‘bling’ that Burrow has become well known for wearing in public, this nickname has also put a certain Houston-based jeweler on the map. Initially starting with a chain featuring a small No. 9 pendant, which he wore when the Bengals drafted him, it wasn’t long before he was seen wearing an even bigger version of the chain. Then came the custom JB9 chain which seemed to be a variation of the Nike logo. The fervor surrounding this nickname, however, ramped up several notches when Burrow delivered perhaps one of the best lines of the post season, after the Bengals defeated the the Chiefs in the AFC Championship game in 2021. Asked if the chain created by Houston jeweler Leo Frost was real, Burrow responded with a sly smile, “They’re definitely real,” he said. “I make too much money to have fake ones.”

Joe Cool

In a nod to the camel cigarette ads of the 1980s, this moniker was attributed to Burrow’s now well known manner, which is to say as calm a Sunday evening by the sea. One could even argue that it is perhaps his best quality. “We’ll win a big game and it’s like whatever to him,” Bengals wide receiver Tyler Boyd said last season after a win against the Jaguars. “He’s already in his playbook looking at the next team, figuring out what they do so we can stay on top of what we gotta do for the next opponent.” Burrow displayed that same sense of peace of mind when the Bengals were preparing to face the Los Angeles Rams in the Super Bowl last year and he said simply, “it feels like another week, honestly”.
