The Indianapolis Colts are trading quarterback Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders only a year after acquiring him from the Philadelphia Eagles.

The quarterback merry-go-round continues to spin, and this time, it’s Carson Wentz’s turn to switch places. The quarterback is moving back to the NFC East as the Indianapolis Colts are set to trade him to the Washington Commanders, only a year after the Colts acquired him from the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Commanders are obtaining Wentz in exchange for a set of draft picks, and are shouldering the rest of his sizable salary. Washington will be shelling out $28 million for his pay in the 2022 season, which includes a $5 million roster bonus due next week.

Wentz’s promising start
Wentz was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2016 as the number two overall pick, and had an outstanding performance in 2017 when he led the Eagles to an 11-2 slate.
He then suffered a torn ACL which ended the season for him, but his contributions were still recognized as Philadelphia went on to win the Super Bowl that year.
The 29-year-old has found it difficult to recover the form that he displayed in his second season, when he was considered MVP material prior to his injury.

Wentz: Downhill since the ACL tear
In 2020, he took a backseat to Jalen Hurts, a second-round draft pick who became the Philadelphia starter, and this triggered Wentz’s transfer to the Colts.
His year with Indianapolis failed to impress, particularly in their last game when they lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars who had only two wins to their name, leading to the Colts’ elimination from the playoffs. Wentz’s exit from the team became imminent after that loss.
